Aids Walk Sends A Strong Message
Caminata contra el SIDA envía un fuerte mensaje
By Heidi Maqueos
Deborah Burnham, a teacher at the Los Angeles School of Global Studies, in the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex and 13 students, members of the GSA Club, were among more than 30,000 people who participated in the 27th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles on Sunday, October 16th.
According to abclocal.go.com, the money raised from the event helps to treat as many as 10,000 AIDS patients locally.
The Aids walk was developed by Craig R. Miller in 1984, during the height of the Aids epidemic. Miller then brought his idea to the Fledgling Aids service organization who adopted this project. Since its inception, Aids Walk Los Angeles has raised more than $72 million for Aids Project Los Angeles and other HIV/AIDS service organizations throughout Los Angeles County.

Aren’t You Tired Of Paying Too Much Money For Gas?
By Paola Barajas
As gas prices are going up and up, a driver’s wallet gets thinner and thinner. Many people now aren’t able to afford many necessities because their extra money is now being spent on gas for their regular commute.
Without much of a choice, and their car as their main source of transportation, they have no other option but to pay the high prices for gas.
One reason gas prices have been going up is due to the fighting in Libya .
According to npr.org, oil has been trading at more than $100 a barrel in the U.S. the past couple of days, largely because of fighting in Libya.
Even though Libya gives 1 percent of gas to the world, the unrest in Libya could impact the Middle East which supplies 11 percent of gas to the world.
We here in America, could feel the effects of the turmoil in the Middle East.
All over Los Angeles, gas prices are up to $4.00 a gallon! If they keep going up, by 2012 the price will be at $5.00 a gallon. Bus fares are also going up because of the rise in gas prices.
This affects not only the people that drive to work, but also students that commute by bus; the rise in the gas price can take a toll on the price of bus passes. Keep Reading Here
New Club Alert: Model United Nations
By: Aslin Paxtor
Commitment, communication, professionalism, critical thinking. These are the skills it takes to be on Model United Nations team.
Model United Nations (or Model U.N.) is when students study a certain country from anywhere in the world and study an issue area that affects the country.
Model U.N. was an elective class last year taught by Geometry teacher Dina Mahmood, but this year it is offered as a club and anyone is welcome to join. Mahmood says, “This year I wanted to offer a geometry support class as an elective and I had to make the very hard decision of deciding which elective to offer. I still wanted Model U.N. around so I offered it as a club.”
Losing Custodians is a Mess
Have you noticed that we rarely see our janitors? The whole complex only has five custodians. We are loosing our custodians due to budget cuts.
According to www.nytimes.com, “The city of department of Education is cutting over $10 million from its custodial budget.” In other words many custodians across our country are being paid less or losing their jobs completely.
In LAUSD, budget cuts have eliminated custodial positions which have left teachers with new tasks after the bell rings. These tasks include: sweeping classrooms and taking out the trash, which might bother some teachers.
Geometry teacher, Dina Mahmood commented, “I said to myself, I am cleaning up after school.” Teachers now have to spend their time cleaning their rooms up after school. She also said, “I worry, I think this is going to be messy, disorganized, and unsafe.”
Assistant Plant Manager, Ramiro Gonzales stated, “Personally I think it is going to get worse without custodians because it is leaving teachers another job, which is not fair; they have a job already!” Keep Reading Here
This actually makes me want to not litter even though I don’t but if I ever feel like I want to I will just hold my trash until I find a trash can.
You guys did an excellent job in writing news articles on actual current and important events that are involving LASGS students! Keep up the good work 🙂
I like this article and it makes me feel to tell poeple who throw trash on the ground to think about it twis befor thorwing it on the ground!!
I think it is really great how The Globe will not only inform us about things that are happening on campus but also out side in the real world.
The restrooms do smell bad and they have trash and I agree that it is because the janitors have too much work each day!
I think it is great that our school is going green and not using paper for our school paper any more. I like how it keeps us updated on things of our school and community.
I am going to tell my friends not to trow their trash on the ground and in the trashcan
I like the website more than the regular paper. The colors make it really exciting and fun to read.
I think this is a great topic you wrote about “Aren’t You Tired Of Paying Too Much Money For Gas?”. But the others articles are also interesting.
i think that losing custodians is a serious problem that I didn’t know about. Our school school should do a better job at helping keep our school clean.
I think it would be interesting to add an article about Occupy LA. I am a senior and my senior project is on this topic so, I would be happy to help write something for the online newspaper.
I think that its much better than the old newspaper and plus we are saving trees!
Its also a great improvement from last year.
Doing a website is better than doing a newspaper because you save paper.
Although the whole MC complex only has 5 custodians & they have to clean after each academy, Global Studies is still the cleanest in the hallways & outside in the Cafeteria. Which proves that we’re actually doing our part to help the custodians by doing our part and cleaning after ourselves.
i agree with Luis Zamago
I really like how the news paper came out and I think that there should be names were the pictures are of who took them. Same for comics to (who drew them.) I also like how the digital news paper replaces the use for paper.
I think it’s sad that we’re losing custodians and we should now be more self-conscious of how we take care of our classrooms/school.
We should not litter at all and we should think about twice if littering because this whole complex only have one janitor. Its hard for one janitor to clean the whole entire school. That we should help the janitor by not littering at all and trow the trash on its place.
I think its a great website however something interesting would be adding news not only from our academy but our entire school or even our city.
I agree that the restrooms stink.
very interesting
Nice nice nice! I like this because I enjoy laughing at the pictures! Good job! I
