Aids Walk Sends A Strong Message

Caminata contra el SIDA envía un fuerte mensaje

By Heidi Maqueos

Deborah Burnham, a teacher at the  Los Angeles School of Global Studies, in the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex and 13 students, members of the GSA Club, were among more than 30,000 people who participated in the 27th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles on Sunday, October 16th.

According to abclocal.go.com, the money raised from the event helps to treat as many as 10,000 AIDS patients locally.

The Aids walk was developed by Craig R. Miller in 1984, during the height of the Aids epidemic. Miller then brought his idea to the Fledgling Aids service organization who adopted this project. Since its inception,  Aids Walk Los Angeles  has raised more than $72 million for Aids Project Los Angeles and other HIV/AIDS service organizations throughout Los Angeles County.

Aren’t You Tired Of Paying Too Much Money For Gas?

By Paola Barajas

As gas prices are going up and up, a driver’s wallet gets thinner and thinner.  Many people now aren’t able to afford many necessities because their extra money is now being spent on gas for their regular commute.

Without much of a choice, and their car as their main source of transportation, they have no other option but to pay the high prices for gas.

One reason gas prices have been going up is due to the fighting in Libya .

According to npr.org, oil has been trading at more than $100 a barrel in the U.S. the past couple of days, largely because of fighting in Libya.

Even though Libya gives 1 percent of gas to the world, the unrest in Libya could impact the Middle East which supplies 11 percent of gas to the world.

We here in America, could feel the effects of the turmoil in the Middle East.

All over Los Angeles, gas prices are up to $4.00 a gallon!  If they keep going up, by 2012 the price will be at $5.00 a gallon. Bus fares are also going up because of the rise in gas prices.

This affects not only the people that drive to work, but also students that commute by bus; the rise in the gas price can take a toll on the price of  bus passes.  Keep Reading Here

New Club Alert: Model United Nations

By: Aslin Paxtor

Commitment, communication, professionalism, critical thinking. These are the skills it takes to be on Model United Nations team.

Model United Nations (or Model U.N.) is when students study a certain country from anywhere in the world and study an issue area that  affects the country.

Model U.N. was an elective class last year taught by Geometry teacher Dina Mahmood, but this year it is offered as a club and anyone is welcome to join.  Mahmood says, “This year I wanted to offer a geometry support class as an elective and I had to make the very hard decision of deciding which elective to offer. I still wanted Model U.N. around so I offered it as a club.”

Losing Custodians is a Mess

By: Rut Tomas
Your walking towards your school and you see trash on the floor and tagging on the wall. You pass by the restroom and this horrible smell goes through your nose, you feel like vomiting but you hold it in. In fact, you decide to not use  the restroom because it’s filled with trash and the smell is very disturbing.

Have you noticed that we rarely  see our janitors? The whole complex only has five custodians. We are loosing our custodians due to budget cuts.

According to www.nytimes.com, “The city of department of Education is cutting over $10 million from its custodial budget.” In other words many custodians across our country are being paid less or losing their jobs completely.

In LAUSD, budget cuts have eliminated custodial positions which have left teachers with new tasks after the bell rings. These tasks include: sweeping classrooms and taking out the trash, which might bother some teachers.

Geometry teacher, Dina Mahmood commented, “I said to myself, I am cleaning up after school.” Teachers now have to spend their time cleaning their rooms up after school. She also said, “I worry, I think this is going to be messy, disorganized, and unsafe.”

Assistant Plant Manager, Ramiro Gonzales stated, “Personally I think it is going to get worse without custodians because it is leaving teachers another job, which is not fair; they have a job already!”  Keep Reading Here
